However, records of AT&T Labs' research clearly invalidate it. There's also a theory that phone engineers wanted to slow down people who were fast at entering numerical data, which would jam lines and produce dialing errors, so they reversed the layout. Still, when it came time to place a numeric keypad on a computer keyboard, the calculator model with 7-8-9 at the top prevailed. It turns out that decision was largely arbitrary: no one had done any research about which layout was most convenient for users. When Bell Labs began exploring keypad layouts in the late 1950s they contacted all of the leading calculator manufacturers to find out why they had chosen to put low numbers at the bottom and high numbers at the top rather than the other way around. It is common practice today to use the telephone-keypad layout when designing new products that utilize a keypad, such as Automated Teller Machines.Back then, the industry-standard typical calculator had nine columns of numbers, with 10 numbers in a column, the lowest digits at the bottom, starting with 0 and moving up to 9, and was basically a mechanical adding machine that closely resembled a cash register.By the time when the touch-tone telephone was being designed in the late 1950s, the calculator and adding-machine designers had already established a layout that had 7, 8 and 9 across the top row.Touch-tone key pad was designed to mimic the rotary dial with the "1" on top and the 7-8-9 on the bottom, and AT&T conducted user testing to confirm that this configuration helped eliminate dialing errors.55% of them went with what might seem the most obvious choice (at least in hindsight): counting from left to right and top down, putting the zero at the bottom (123,456,789,0).There's this humongous article called Keyboard Trivia that has collected many of the theories and stories. 7% of participants went down before going right (147,258,369,0). Ultimately, 8% of people emulated a calculator layout (789,456,123,0). What seems familiar to us now was entirely new territory for these people, except the few who had used calculators. Sample test sheet comparing different key configurations across six layoutsīut there was still a question of where to put the numbers in the grid, so testers were given blank layouts asked to fill them in. They disliked the vertical tower variant but actually made fewer mistakes on it (in part because they were going slower). Performance and preference differences, though, were deemed to be fairly small overall across the five finalists, so for engineering reasons Bell went with the layout we know today. Testers expressed a preference for and were able to type faster on the familiar rotary-style ones. In the end, they narrowed it down to five layouts, including: the familiar grid (which we still use to this day) two circular variants (inspired by existing rotary phones), one with two vertical columns and one with two horizontal rows (each row or column containing five numbers). The researchers whittled down the list by seeing how fast and accurately people could type in numbers on different pad arrangements. Their designers came up with sixteen distinct options shown below (eighteen total but two are duplicated: II-A + VI-B and IV-A + VI-A).īell Labs had a number of human factors experts, so they started bringing personnel in to brainstorm and test these different ideas. Some may look impractical if not downright silly in hindsight, but Bell wanted to make sure to examine the problem from all possible angles. As such, other variations were explored as well, including calculator-style grids, bowling-alley triangles, stair-like angles, cross-shaped configurations and more. Still, Bell saw this as an opportunity to start from scratch, going back to the drawing board and trying out all kinds of creative alternatives. It seemed from the start that this approach might win out in the end. The first layout solution proposed was a carryover from existing phones: numbers laid out in a circle. Touch-tone phones would make dialing much faster and easier. Rotary telephones could be time-consuming to operate - for those unfamiliar: you had to spin the dial for each number, then let the wheel spin back, repeating the process over and over again. As rotary-dial phones began to be replaced by touch-tone variants, a design challenge (and opportunity) arose around how this new system would work.

I've also tried using the default settings for the G29 within the game, as the game itself seems to have a default G29 setup. It has a preset profile for Assetto Corsa, which doesn't work. I don't care what axis it is, as long as it works. I've tried messing with the G29 software profiler, but can't seem to figure out a way to reassign the clutch axis to a differently numbered axis. It just sits there while I attempt to depress the clutch, and does nothing. I can set the gas and brake, the steering axis and the shifter works fine, just the clutch doesn't. I can see axis 7 moving when I depress the clutch within the game, but when I click to set the clutch input, it doesn't recognize that axis 7 is a possible candidate to be the clutch pedal. When I try to go to the inputs screen under options within the game, the game recognizes clutch input in the lower left corner of the screen under axis input 7, HOWEVER, it will not accept this as an input for the clutch. I thought this was weird because I thought the order would be clutch/brake/throttle, as the pedals are aligned. The positioning was brake/throttle/grayed out clutch from left to right. It also appeared as though the throttle input was the middle input, and the brake was the left input of the three. When attempting to drive, I put the clutch/throttle/brake position sensors on, and it looked like one was greyed out. It recognizes the gas and brake, steering axis and pretty much everything except the clutch. The problem is that the game doesn't recognize the Clutch axis (currently axis 7) as an acceptable input for the clutch input slot. I'm running Windows 7 SP1, up to date G29 software/profiler, and Iracing and Rfactor 2 both work flawlessly with the G29. I installed Assetto Corsa recently and have tried to configure it, but for the life of me, I can't. This is New York State's first indoor waterpark. This major addition includes a 38,000 square feet (3,500 m 2) waterpark exclusively for lodge guests. In February 2006, The Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark opened up with positive reviews and sold-out weekends throughout the first month. Unlike many parks during that time, Great Escape was not rebranded or flagged as a Six Flags park. In 1996, Charles Wood sold the park to Premier Parks who would later go on to purchase the Six Flags company. Roller coaster enthusiasts recognize it as one of the best wooden roller coasters in North America. Charley Wood, the owner of Great Escape Fun Park and Fantasy Island in Grand Island, New York successfully bid for The Comet and it sat in storage for a few years in Fantasy Island before making its way to the park in Queensbury, NY and reopening in 1994. It was saved shortly after the park closed down forever after the 1988 season. Re-opened at The Great Escape in 1994, this roller coaster already had a 41-year history as The Comet at Crystal Beach (an amusement park near Niagara Falls, Ontario). The showpiece attraction at The Great Escape is the Comet. In 1984, The Great Escape opened the Steamin' Demon, the first of its eventual seven roller coasters. In 1983, the park officially changed its name from Storytown USA to The Great Escape. This was when a car bumper was separate from the body and one could get all the way around it with wire. This practice stopped a few years later due to complaints and employees switched to attaching cardboard versions with wire. : 47 In 1957, realizing that the park was geared only toward small children, the park opened its Ghost Town area, the first of many themed areas opened in the park's history.įor publicity, the park placed bumper stickers on every car in the parking lot.
